Licensed Audiologist

I was inspired to help those with hearing loss when I was in 5th grade after seeing a movie about Helen Keller. The movie made such an impression on me that I started to learn sign language on my own. In high school, I was inducted into the National Honor Society and was among the top 10 of my senior class, graduating with honors.

I attended St. Louis University from 1972 until 1975, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Speech/Language Pathology in August 1975. I was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, a prestigious national honor society in April, 1975.

I continued my graduate studies at Wayne State University in Detroit where I provided clinical audiology services at many places as part of my training, such as a rehabilitation clinic, a general hospital, a veteran's hospital, an ENT clinic, a children's hospital and a school district. I graduated with honors in 1977 with a Master's degree in audiology. I was awarded national certification in audiology from the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association in January 1978. In July, 1994, I became a Fellow of the Illinois Academy of Audiology.

Upon graduation, I moved to Peoria where I worked as part of a diagnostic team with Peoria Public Schools. I worked exclusively with the pediatric population, testing hearing in children of all ages, including infants and those with severe multiple disabilities. I made recommendations for hearing aids and other adaptive equipment for children with hearing loss. I also was one of the first people in the entire state to perform central auditory processing evaluations for children with learning or attention problems.
I was awarded national certification as a professional supervisor of the audiometric component of a hearing conservation program by the Council of Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation in November 2005.

Besides possessing national certification in audiology, I have held a license in speech/language pathology. I have worked both as a school speech/language pathologist as well as an augmentative communication specialist at a school for those with multiple severe disabilities.

In May 1989, I started my own private practice in audiology where I expanded my population to include adults and fitting people with hearing aids. I have specialized in difficult to test populations, such as infants and young children, those with severe mental and physical disabilities, and mental health disorders of all types and degrees. I also provide hearing screenings for children in various types of programs, as well as hearing screenings and diagnostic audiological evaluations for a variety of companies whose employees need their hearing monitored due to their work in noisy environments.

In June 1997, I received a national award, the Professional Advisor's Award, from the Self Help for Hard of Hearing Group because of my long term dedication and commitment to help those with hearing loss. I volunteered my services and time for many years to the local chapter of this organization, serving as a professional advisor and secretary.

I have been featured on a variety of news programs on both TV and radio, with topics ranging from hearing loss to hearing aids to the damaging effects of noise and music upon hearing. I have provided extensive presentations and in-services to a variety of audiences, including rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes, senior citizen facilities, psychiatric hospitals, parent groups, new mother groups and schools.
